8 Myths about Magnetic Charging Cables debunked [Part 1/4]

Magnetic charging cables are a new phenomenon which many people believe to be the one of the greatest inventions in the phone accessories world of the past decade.

For those who have already adopted these revolutionary cables, they are absolutely in love with it!

But do USB magnetic charging cables really work? Are they really that revolutionary and safe to use?

This article will debunk the most common myths about Magnetic charging cables. We will divide this topic in 4 different blog posts. The first one will answer the following assumptions:

  1. Magnetic charging cables are not save for your phone.
  2. Magnetic chargers are not compatible with all devices.

Myth #1: Magnetic charging cables are not safe for your phone.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the safety of magnetic charging cables. Some people believe that they are safe, while others disagree. However, these magnetic cables are perfectly safe to use according to industry experts.

The main concern about many customers is about the electromagnetic radiation and magnetic waves caused by magnets. Fortunately, the magnets that are used in magnetic charging cables are so small that they won’t harm your phone at all (even if you place it close to the battery or to your phone screen).

The latest iPhone from Apple (iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro) is a perfect example of safe magnet utilization. This new flagship phone has a nice feature called “Magsafe” wireless charging that uses a ring of magnets to attach any magnetic accessories directly to the back of the phone. The built-in magnet in the iPhone 12 is 10 times bigger than the ones we are using in our cables, and yet it’s absolutely safe for the phone (otherwise Apple would put magnets in their phone, heh).

To conclude, while there may be some safety concerns with these small tiny magnets used in magnetic charging cables, they're not nearly as dangerous or harmful as people might think! If you have been considering buying one but haven't because of those fears this article should help ease your mind. Myth #2: Magnetic cables are not compatible with my phones / Tablet / Reader / ...

Charging your devices (smartphone, tablet, laptop, reader, power bank, …) may seem like a very common task we do every day. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as it sounds. To charge all the devices, you need to have different cables for each device because they don't share the same connector.

Until big tech companies reach an agreement for a standard charging connector, we will continue to juggle between all our different charging cables.

The good news is that over 95% of the electronic devices available today use one of these 3 connectors:

  • Micro USB
  • Type C
  • Lightning

Micro-USB

With the launch of the first Android Smartphones back in 2010, the micro USB port became the standard charging connector for every smartphone (besides Apple). The Micro-USB is an evolution of the regular USB port, called USB Type-A. They both share the same performance and functionality, but Micro USB ports are much smaller than its big brother.

Micro USB connectors are today the least popular charging connector because they are being gradually replaced by the new Type C connectors. However, this first generation USB connector is still used by entry-level smartphones and many electronic devices such as the popular Kindle from Amazon, some power banks and others battery-powered devices.

USB Type C

In the past few years, phones have been evolving at an exponential rate. In fact, most of them are now moving on to USB-C connectors that were released in 2015 with Apple's introduction of the MacBook and Google's Pixel laptops. This is a very different connector from how we're used to because of its reversible design. The main idea behind this new design was to improve the versatility of the USB connector. The most important characteristic of the USB Type-C is that it is reversible, meaning that it can be inserted in either orientation and is designed to support a sleeker, slimmer design for devices.

This type of connector also has more pins which lead to faster data transfer speeds and higher power delivery. Thanks to that, the USB-C connector is capable of charging high end devices, such as tablets, or even laptops!

There have been many attempts at creating a universal interface over the past years but none have succeeded like this one. The USB Type-C connector is truly the connector of the future.

Lightning

Apple created the lightning connector as a sleek and modern replacement for their previous 30-pin dock connector. The lightning connector was launched together with the launch of the iPhone 5 back in October 2012. At that time, it was the first phone connector that was reversible, meaning that you could connect it to the iPhone in any direction.

Although this may seem very common today, it was a true revolutionary technology back in that time because USB type-C connector was not yet available on the market.

The lightning port is still very popular today. The latest iPhone released a couple months ago still uses this connector, meaning that Apple won’t replace it any time soon.

However, bigger devices such as iPad and Macbook use USB-C connector because of its capability to hold higher current and transfer speed.
